Our history

3 April 1875 Foundation stone of Christ Church laid down by Lord Shaftesbury.

May 1876 Christ Church consecrated, The Rev. William Welch as the first vicar.

1879 Holiday tent services were held in the Fairfield.

1886 First Sunday school founded, missionary work in South America began.

1902 Most of the present halls opened by the Bishop of Ripon.

1914/16 Christ Church halls become a military hospital and No. 1 Christ Church Road was used as an isolation ward.

1926 Jubilee hall built to mark Jubilee.

1928/81 Children’s Church met in the halls at 10.00 and Sunday School at 3.00.

July 1930 Chimes installed in the tower in memory of Harrington Lees.

1935/56 Canon Guy King Vicar, died 1 October 1956.

1936 Consecration of our ‘daughter church’, St. Johns, Eden Park. Costing £14,000 to build. Our curate became the first vicar, the Rev. W A Berry.

5 January 1945 A bomb fell on the community of Fairfield Road and Burnhill Road, killing 12, making many homeless and wrecking the church.

May 1945 A service of memorial and thanksgiving held in the church, which became the temporary centre of worship.

1946 Caleb Club founded as a young peoples fellowship.

5 January 1950 Christ Church rebuilding completed and reconsecrated by the Bishop of Rochester.

7 October 1951 Te Deum Window unveiled by Robert H. Gummer Esq. and dedicated by The Dean of Rochester and The Rev. Canon Guy H. King.

1957/78 Canon Herbert Cragg served as vicar. (Canon Herbert Cragg was Archdeacon of Bromley from 1969 till his retirement in 1978 on Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday when he preached on "His banner over me is love" and "As you have sown, so shall you reap.")

18 July 1979 The Rev. Tony Baker, was instituted.

13 September 1995 The present Vicar, The Rev. Nicholas Wynne-Jones, was instituted.

1 January 2000 Christ Church enters the new millennium with a presence on the Internet.

20 May 2001Christ Church celebrates 125 years.
